Space is not real - A great idea for unifying Quantum theory with Relativity

Wow I just came across a mind-blowing paper today..all I can say is wow. This is as exciting to me (perhaps more so) than when I came across the transactional interpretation of quantum physics.

Let me summarize it before linking to it.

It is written by Fotini Markopoulou, P.H.D. From her bio:

Born in Athens, Greece, she received her Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Imperial College, London. She held postdoctoral positions at Pennsylvania State University, Imperial College, and the Albert Einstein/Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, Berlin, before moving to Canada in 2001 as a founding member and faculty at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada, a research institute devoted to foundational issues in theoretical physics.

Anyway, I am just pointing out she is not some loon on the interweb but a highly educated theoretical physicist.

Basically she addresses the problem I have been struggling with for a long time.. why is it quantum physics and einsteinian general relativity do not agree?

Her answer in a nutshell: There is no space, there is no geometry. Motion is an illusion as is anything solid, or 'here' and 'there'. Geometry arises from a lower energy state of the universe.

What is real? Energy and time. In fact when we dig deep enough into "solid" matter we see it is just energy. And to make it even creepier, energy in a state of 'superposition'..in all places at the same time. Until it is observed. The role of the observer in this is still not understood and she does not address this..she only seeks to unify general relativity with quantum physics. Unifying quantum theory and general relativity are one of the top 5 greatest problems facing modern theoretical physics.

(if you still don't believe me that motion is an illusion i encourage you to read the following page: http://www.mathpages.com/rr/s3-07/3-07.htm)

Anyway, here is her essay:
http://fqxi.org/data/essay-contest-f...1bae814fb4f9e9

I'll cut and paste some of my favorite points from her paper:
-"Space does not exist, so time can" Fotini Markopoulou PHD (Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics):

Quantum gravity is often seen as the problem of unifying or reconciling general relativity and quantum theory, combining the physics of the very large with that of the very small. There are certainly places where we need both, such as black hole physics, where no real progress can be made without a quantum theory of gravity. The incompatibility of general relativity and quantum theory can be stated in many ways and a classic one is the problem of time.

Quantum gravity has been facing the problem of time for half a century. Will it continue to cause trouble for the next half century? Or is the problem of time a fake problem? Could it be a paradox? We arrived at it by putting together true statements from general relativity and from quantum theory and we found a contradiction. Now, either fundamental science is stuck or we just have a paradox that will go away if we find the faulty premise. What can the faulty premise be?

Basically I view it like two opposing witnesses at a trial. Both give completely contradictory statements about what occurred. But both accounts are proven to be true. How can this be? As she points out it is a paradox, and as she also points both are true and factual statements. This is similar to when they PROVED without a shadow of a doubt that light was a particle in 1906, then PROVED without a shadow of a doubt that light is a wave in 1936. How can this be? Well we still don't know that answer but it's just some of the fun quantum weirdness we uncovered in the first half of the 20th century. She continues:

I must emphasize that no geometry does not mean discrete or fuzzy geometry. It means that the most primary aspects of geometry, such as the notion of \here" and \there" will cease to make sense. In fact, we have been grappling with no geometry for a while, in the traditional quantum gravity settings. A quantization of general relativity leads to a quantum superposition of all geometries. What is not often appreciated is that the superposition of all geometries is nothing like a geometry.

You may need to be more awake to grasp the next portion of her point of a world without geometry, but it makes sense. I keep telling you about how particles seem to be everywhere at once, all possibilities at once. Another way of looking at is as she points out is that they are in all geometric points at once. Much like floating in space and 'up' and 'down' ceasing to exist, when you are in the quantum scale of things, there is no 'here' or 'there'. No geometry. Without geometry, there is no motion.

Take two geometries or, equivalently, two causal structures 1 and 2. Let us say that in geometry 1 event A and event B are close while in geometry 2 they are far. If you are event A, in world 1 you see event B here, in world 2 you see event B there. Now superpose not only 1 and 2 but all possible geometries. B is all over the place. (This is the easy version, I am assuming you can identify A and B in both which, in fact, you generally cannot do since you need the notion of here and there to assign identity).

The monstrosity we just created does not even have a sensible notion of here and there, the most basic aspect of geometry. It also does not have a notion of dimension. It's only the fact that we call it "quantum geometry", a combination of two words we understand, that fools us into thinking we comprehend it.

Cool stuff right? This starts to make sense to me. I am convinced motion can't be real, and by extension geometry can not be real. Here is a very solid mathematical proof (her paper has all the math, which I don't pretend to understand, I stick to these mind exercises instead) that geometry is not real. And by extension motion can't possibly be real. This explains some of the effects we see in quantum physics..of particles being everywhere at once, having all possibilities at once. All geometric possibilities..because the geometry is not something that is real..the energy is. The geometry (the collapse of the wave function/ decoherenece ) only becomes 'real' once an observer observes the particle. Again, she does not go as far as explaining why observers have any effect on reality, but I feel she hints at her opinion/theory here:

Background independence means to make no distinction between geometry and matter and to describe the dynamics of the universe as seen by observers inside it. Di eomorphisms are not about timelessness but about being inside a dynamical universe, a ffecting it and being a ffected by it, constituting it.\

She then continues about how geomtry arrises from a fundamental universe that has no geometry/space:

Let us name geometrogenesis the process of transitioning from a fundamental quantum theory of gravity without geometry to the known geometric physics. The geometrogenesis scenario is a simple one. At high energy, or in the early universe, there is no notion of geometry or geometric locality.

Having raised the possibility that geometry does not exist at the fundamental level, we now need to find a way to do physics without geometry. This may appear hard because all our physics is done with geometry. But we can use a relational and information theoretic language.

In this essay I argued that the problem of time is really a paradox that can be traced to taking spacetime geometry too seriously, beyond its domain of applicability. Timelessness refers only to the geometric time, not the microscopic fundamental time. Fundamental time exists but space, geometry and gravity do not.

This also goes back to what I have concluded myself from my own studies. Why is it gravity and momentum are indistinguishable? The conclusion I came to is this:

What if the things affected by gravity and momentum are not real? And the "forces" we feel are a result of this? Gravity affects mass (which is not real) and momentum is the "force" we feel..the magical tugging when we move. Maybe movement is not real either..and that is why these "forces' magically tug and push at us, and why the forces are identical. The more mass..the more gravity...the more speed...the more momentum.

This paper, and her theory, go a long way to unifying classic general relativity with quantum theory. She is one smart greek! And it is perhaps poetic that one of the original people who proposed motion was not real was Xenophanes (Zeno) over 2,500 years ago. Motion can not possibly be real..so space/geometry can not be real either.

If we come across a viable and testable quantum gravitational theory within my lifetime I will be ecstatic!

here is another paper that comes to similair conclusions:

http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/arxiv/pdf/0904/0904.3520v1.pdf

The Five Great Unsolved Problems of Modern Physics.

They are as follows:

Figure out a way to get Relativity and Quantum Physics to agree. (right now both are considered true but both disagree with each other, a real doozy of cognitive dissonance)

Figure out WTF Dark matter is or if it exists at all (I don't think it exists, I think it simply shows our current subscription to general relativity as the model for most everything is flawed)

Figure out a way to remove the observer from Quantum physics (many scientists consider it a problem that consciousness plays any role in reality and view it as an error in how we interpret Quantum Physics..I disagree I think that the results are correct and consciousness does indeed play a role in reality) or make better sense of why the observer/consciousness is so critical to the experimental results. (this has been described as the SINGLE GREATEST problem facing modern science and the biggest obstacle for it to make any progress).

If it is impossible to remove the observer from Quantum Physics the conclusion is inescapable: Conscious observers are critical to reality

Unify Particles and Forces

The Physical reasons or mechanism responsible for setting the free constants in the standard model or particle physics are "chosen" by nature somehow. We don't know why or how.

DO NOT put long stories on multiple pages.

Why in God's name would I want to keep clicking next to read the rest of the story? There is a thing called a scroll bar, I can utilize it to scan long stories. Or at least make multiple page stories an option people can activate if they wish.

Better yet, use LIQUID LAYOUTS. yes, the internet is not the printed page.
Causality

We accept that time can go infinitely into the future. Cause effect, cause and effect, over and over infinity into the future. What if then, that applies backward in time as well? Effect and cause, effect and cause, over and over infinitely into the past? Then there would be no need for a first cause. First cause defies logic anyway, as it would then render causality useless and meaningless. First cause would imply that causality is not a hard-and-fast law, but something that happens only now and then. First cause is a cause with no effect, which again, would disprove causality as a constant law of the universe. Infinite causes into the past would not only do away with the concept of first cause, but make "now" a sort of moot point. "now" is always evolving anyway, it comes and goes. It's more a concept than a reality. More an idea than a tangible thing.

To put it in a nutshell: just as there is no end to everything, there is no beginning to everything. It all just..is. And was. And will always be.

Understanding the right-wing crazy heads - why the right wing is so insane

I used to be a cult member, raised as a Jehovah's Witness. I bought everything hook line and sinker and was a model JW walking the party lines, so to speak. gays are bad, gays deserve aids, god hates fags, etc.

I never actually THOUGHT about ANY of my beliefs or positions. I was told what to believe, and never questioned it. Homosexuality is from Satan, Catholics are actually worshiping Satan, only 144,000 people will go to heaven, the rest will live forever on paradise on earth. The other 6 billion humans will be killed by God. I prayed every day for God to slaughter 6 billion humans.

We used to go house to house knocking on doors, talking about which house we'd live in once God killed everyone. Seriously.

And I firmly believe the nuttiest of the right-wing are exactly like this. it's no coincidence many are religious. They are told what to believe, what to spout, and do it. Logic does not apply. It never does when you are indoctrinated.

So i think I finally understand the nuttiness.

<lj-embed id="17" />

I finally watched 'Waltz with bashir' last night. It had BEAUTIFUL animation, but despite being a war movie was quite boring. I did learn a little about history, and after reading up on The lebanese civil war I have a somewhat better understanding of the massacres against civilians the movie centers around.

In a nutshell:

Lebanon has a large christian population, specifically Maronite Christians

They had a civil war between political groups of Christians vs Palestinian Muslims

Israel armed and trained the Phalangist political party (christians) since they had a mutual hatred for Palestinian mulims

The Phalangist leader Bashir was assassinated in 1982.

Israel sent forces into Lebanon to help the Phalangists

Two days after Phalangist leader Bashir was assassinated, the Israeli Defense Forces surrounded the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila, not allowing anyone to escape

They then allowed the Phalangists to enter the camp

3,500 Palestinian unarmed women, children, old men etc are massacred.

The movie is a documentary about a Israeli soldier who was there, who was so traumatized by what he saw that it was erased from his memory, and the documentary is about him finding his old batallion members and finding out what happened.

When they finally reach the massacre it's interesting, but all the stuff before then is really slow boring conversations. The animation was superb and unlike anything I have ever seen before... but overall I couldn't really recommended this to anyone other than animation enthusiasts.

laura Dekker, Jessica Dubroff, Vicki Van Meter and stage parents

I recently read the following article:

A 13-year-old Dutch girl has been placed under state supervision after a court blocked her attempt to become the world's youngest person to sail the globe solo.

I agree they should take this kid away from the parents. Solo round the world sailing is extremely dangerous.

This brings to mind the case of Jessica Dubroff. 7 year old girl attempting to be the youngest to fly across the country. She died on impact, along with her parents.

Trust me, kids like this do NOT want this kind of publicity and fame. It's ALWAYS stage parents. The 7 year old Jessica, just like this new girl laura are being manipulated by stage parents seeking to use their seed to gain fame and attention to themselves.

It's why child stars are always so fucked up. Michael Jackson is a prime example. These kids are abused and deprived of their childhood and irreparably psychologically damaged for life when stage parents take over their childhood.

Take another example,Vicki Van Meter who was a child pilot like Jessica and set child records for flying. She blew her head off at age 26 last year.

The case of 7 year-old Jessica caused new laws to be passed in the US. Under 49 USC § 44724 it is illegal to attempt to set records as a student pilot.

So going back to this dutch kid, Why else would they even inform the media or anyone about her attempt to sail around the world? Because they want the media attention, glory, fame etc. They want sponsors, they want guiness book of world records involved etc. Fucking stage parents, I wish they would yank child stars away from their families here in the US.

Here is a good article detailing how dangerous the Volvo Ocean race is, and these are professional sailors with state of the art equipment and a massive support team:
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/SPORT/10/10/yacht.tragedies/index.html

10 things I learned from watching 'State of Play' (spoilers)

So i went out to see 'State of Play' to see if I could see me. Indeed, you can see me, but only the same scenes you see me in the trailer. Anyway:

10 things I learned from watching 'State of Play' (spoilers)

DC Cops respond to incidents in Crystal City, Virginia

You can leave a hospital on the 3rd floor via elevator, run across the street to a building where you stashed your silence sniper rifle, and shoot the recovering patient all in the time it takes for a journalist to walk from the same elevator to the hospital room.

There is plenty of convenient parking in Washington DC

Reporters drink..ALL THE TIME

You can learn a lot of useful information from sweaty guys named Vic if you agree to not one, but two dates

Even after your best friend sleeps with your wife you can still continue to trust him, and should be astonished if he betrays you again.

You can shove a woman during busy morning commute onto the path of a train and there will be zero witnesses to see you do it.

If you plan on shoving a woman onto the path of a train, and there are only 3 blind spots in the cameras in the metro, your victim will automatically stand right in the sweet spot.

The only purpose of parking garages in movies is for the psycho guy to stalk you. That and car chases.

If a story is important enough then people should have newsprint on their fingers when they read it. No need to you know, post it online or anything. It can wait.

Editors serve no purpose other than to let their reporters do whatever they want.

BUG OUT!

Stranger: oh shit oh sh

You: Bring it left. Bring it left, You're high.

Stranger: redleader standing by

You: Don't screw around with me Maverick. You're a hell of an instinctive pilot. Maybe too good. I'd like to bust your butt but I can't.

Stranger: yes

You: The rules of engagement are not flexible. They exist for your safety. You will obey them.Is that clear?

Stranger: because we must destroy the dethstar

You: Is that why you fly the way you do? Trying to prove something? Yeah your old man did it right. What I'm about to tell you is classified. It could end my career. We were in the worst dogfight I ever dreamed of. There were bogeys like fireflies all over the sky. His F-4 was hit, and he was wounded, but he could've made it back. He stayed in it, saved three planes before he bought it.

Stranger: get ready

You: The hottest moves in the world aren't gonna help you if you wind up alone. Your wingman's got to be able to follow you. Trust you. Know that he can depend on you. It's more than just fancy flying.

Stranger: its okay

You: You fly reckless. Great instincts. No discipline. That ambush today, you followed your emotions instead of your wingman. Of course you got killed...and well deserved to. It was a really stupid mistake. In battle, it gets people killed.

Stranger: i have photon torpedos

You: Talent is no holy shield. Von Richtofen was killed by a farm boy. Instincts are not enough. Do it our way. We've worked these things out. The good pilots can become better and the great ones can learn how to stay alive. Why do you have to do everything the hard way?

Stranger: yes

Stranger: i know

You: My first squadron in Vietnam, we lost eight out of eighteen planes. Ten guys. The first one kills you, but there'll be others--you can count on it.

Stranger: ackbar be with us

Stranger: my squad onj alduran died

Stranger: and its all your fault

You: Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash. You've been busted, you lost your qualifications as section leader three times, put in hack twice by me, with a history of high speed passes over five air control towers, and one admiral's daughter!

You: BREAK LEFT! BREAK LEFT! CHAFF! FLARES!

You: GHOST RIDER, THIS IS MUSTANG. PERMISSION TO FIRE. PERMISSION TO FIRE.

Stranger: red leader

Stranger: gratns

Stranger: stay sharp

You: VOODOO ONE, MUSTANG. VOODOO THREE IS HIT. GOING DOWN. WILL ATTEMPT SAR.

Stranger: you got 3 at 6:00

You: I'm gonna take him, Goose.

Stranger: thanks

You: We can send you back to your squadron with nothing noted on your record except "CNC" --course not completed, no explanation required. Theoretically, it doesn't hurt your career, but people always wonder about things like that.
You: All you've got is one life. I guess it's worth about the same to every body. You ever see an old woman after her husband has died?

Stranger: pull up

You: And the meaningless years of decline stretch ahead... When you're in the air and doing something really dangerous, you can look ahead... maybe ten seconds. That's your whole future. That's as far as it goes. But imagine what those seconds are worth.

Stranger: your gonna crash!!!

Stranger: ARHFHAGUHUIOGSHNUIOAGHDUIOHGAUIOGHIOAGHUIOGHAGHIODSAGHSDIOANGSDIOZHGFUIOSHUIGHERUIOPSHSUIPHGUIOHFYUSDGSFYGAYUHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHRARG

You: Maverick, you just did an incredibly brave thing. What you should have done was land your plane! You don't own that plane, the tax payers do!

Stranger: GARGAMESH!

Why Capitalism Sucks

The capitalists generate their wealth by exploiting employees. An employee is not paid according to the true worth of his labor but according to what the employer is willing to pay him. The employer pays him less than what his labor is worth so that the employer can make a profit when he sells the produce.

Wealth and unequal distribution can create social problems (such as higher crime rates).

Government interference in markets can be skewed to benefit the wealthy. In particular, wealthy people have the financial means and incentives to influence or corrupt government officials and to lobby for favorable legislation.

Many people have little wealth left over after living expenses, so they can't make it grow quickly. This further deepens the disparity between rich and poor.

Persistent long-term inequality of wealth undermines the motivation of the poor to improve their stance. This creates not only direct but perpetual sociological inequity.

Wealthy people save relatively more than poor people. Hence some economists believe that an unequal distribution of wealth undermines an economy's mass buying power, effectively leading to lower aggregate sales, reduced wealth production, unemployment and crises.

Wealth is defined and judged incorrectly, in many different ways. In particular, people may attach value to things for seemingly irrational reasons (sentimental value). Some may also value spiritual development more than material wealth. Capitalism's focus on absolute monetary value thus undermines the legitimacy of alternate paradigms.

The wealthy may not put their wealth to productive use. For example, they may buy land just to deny access to it to others, for personal or environmental reasons. They may buy out other companies that produce better products but are a competitor, and then sit on the product not allowing it to be released to the public.

When everything is done for profit, it creates immoral systems. For example, healthcare is currently for-profit. As a result insurance companies will seek whatever means possible to deny expensive care to people to maximize their profit. People who are poor can not afford health care and have a lower quality of life as a result. Many life-saving operations such as organ transplants are so expensive few can afford them and die instead.

The disparity between the laborer and the employer is enormous. Currently many executives earn over 500 times what their employees earn.

Companies can easily circumvent moral hazard of bad decisions by being 'too big to fail'. The company is so large and employs so many people that if it were to fail the entire nations economy would plunge. The companies can use this is blackmail to the Government forcing the government to grant large bailouts. This therefore encourages exploitative and damaging investments and tactics by companies.

Capitalism encourages debt. Laborers are granted access to loaned money with interest, and encouraged to purchase large items they can not afford to purchase with cash like a house or a car or an education, and then enslaved to that debt for 30 years or more. By the time the debt is paid off the total money repaid is often times more than twice what was borrowed.

Capitalism does not care about individual people, only profit. As a result many companies try to get as much labor as possible from as few people as possible, ideally eliminating employees all together. The drive for cheaper labor to maximize profits results in labor being imported from overseas, which takes away jobs from those who live within the capitalist nation.

Capitalism encourages people to seek careers in whichever field generates the most income. Thus someone who would have been a promising teacher instead becomes an investment banker solely for the money. People do what pays the most, not what they love the most, or what they are naturally talented at. Vital work for social health such as teachers, social workers, librarians, are paid the least.

Capitalism discourages the pursuit of pure science. Funding is easy to find for profitable fields such as baldness treatment, impotence, obesity, skin care and other cosmetic issues, while funding for pure sciences such as theoretical physics, space exploration, etc are much harder to obtain.

Capitalism encourages people to seek to amass wealth and possessions rather than to help their fellow man or society. It breeds selfishness and discourages selflesness. There is no profit in helping those who have no means to repay you.

Capitalism displaces justice. The wealthy can afford more talented lawyers and buy their way out of excessive jail time or punishments. They can afford higher fines and fees. The poor can not afford good legal defense and suffer harsher sentences as a result.
