I grew up in DC and when I was a kid, for years and years I had this deeply ingrained terror that if I opened my windowshade at night, I would see a giant owl sitting on the windowsill staring at me.
I've only seen a live owl perhaps 5 times in my life, and never, as far as I know, before I was about 15. However, when I was a kid, I was either told incorrectly or assumed incorrectly that the calls of mourning doves were owls.
Now you know something about my life that will never benefit you in any way. I know you care deeply about this matter, which clearly may cause ripples throughout the world's economy and change everything we thought we knew about global warming. I'm glad we were able to share that. Aren't you?
Answer my pointless poll about owls! Because it's snowing and I have nothing better to do than think up weird shit and share it with the internet.

Post all things snowpocalypse here!
(pics, updates, snow ball fights, etc.)
The Capitol Hill Weather Gang is saying this is probably going to be a top 5 storm of ALL TIME for DC, and definitely the worst (or best ;)) December storm ever. 16-24+ inches folks!

No Parking on Snow Emergency Routes After 7am Saturday
Forecasts Calling for Significant Snowfall in the District
(Washington, DC) Mayor Adrian M. Fenty declared a snow emergency in the District of Columbia tonight, effective as of 7am on Saturday, December 19, 2009. Weather forecasts are predicting as much as 10-20 inches of snow to fall in the District before the precipitation ends Saturday night.
The District’s Snow Team (Department of Transportation and Department of Public Works) is launching a full deployment of snow removal equipment and personnel to treat and clear all of the city’s major and residential streets. That means more than 330 pieces of equipment will be available. Crews will deploy tonight in advance of the first precipitation to salt the roadways and will begin plowing when the snow begins to accumulate.
When a snow emergency is declared all vehicles must be moved immediately from marked snow emergency routes. Parking is prohibited on these routes and vehicles that are not moved are subject to a $250 fine and additional fees for towing and storage at an impoundment lot. Motorists may call 202-541-6083 if they believe their vehicle has been towed.
In addition, taxi cabs may charge an increased rate during a declared snow emergency. The meter is pre-programmed and the drivers will use rate button 3 on the meter which automatically adds an additional 25% to the metered fare. So what shows on the meter is the correct fare and nothing more. Passengers are reminded to ask for a meter-generated receipt if they have any doubts.
For more information about the snow emergency procedures and routes, visit www.ddot.dc.gov/snow. The snow emergency routes are also listed below.
Residents are reminded to spread salt or kitty litter on their sidewalks, walkways and steps before the snow begins. That will make it easier to shovel the snow after the storm ends.
In addition, the Department of Public Works has suspended leaf collection and Saturday’s Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling/Document Shredding services due to the predicted snow storm. Leaf collection employees and equipment form the backbone of DPW’s snow fighting team; so when snow is predicted, leaf collection trucks are taken out of service to have plows and salt spreaders mounted on them. For more information visit DPW’s new Web site at www.dpw.dc.gov.

Here are the record December snows for some other regional reporting stations:
Baltimore: 14.1", December 11-12, 1960
Richmond: 17.2", December 22-23, 1908
Baltimore's record is in play (50/50 chance), though it may be a little tougher for Richmond (20% chance) -- because they'll be flirting with the rain/snow line.
Could this storm make it into the top five on record of all time in D.C. (including all months of the year)? I'd give that a 30% chance. Here are the top five storms:
January 27-28, 1922 ... 28 inches
February 11-13, 1899 ... 20.5 inches
February 18-19, 1979 ... 18.7 inches
January 6-8, 1996 ... 17.1 inches
February 15-18, 2003 ... 16.7 inches
The National Weather Service has a great site which lists the top 15 storms for D.C. and Baltimore. About a 50/50 chance we make it in.

D sent this to me. Very interesting research.
Calorie Intake Linked to Cell Lifespan, Cancer Development
ScienceDaily (Dec. 18, 2009) — Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) have discovered that restricting consumption of glucose, the most common dietary sugar, can extend the life of healthy human-lung cells and speed the death of precancerous human-lung cells, reducing cancer's spread and growth rate.
One of my coworkers asked if we could leave at 3, but the director said maybe. I'm betting it depends on where I am with formatting this report I have yet to receive!
Leaving at 3 would be nice though. I'd start some laundry and hit up the grocery store. I'm craving burgers like whoa so I'm thinking turkey burger with a baked sweet potato for dinner.

Tomorrow is my official last day of school for this term! I will get vacation time till February 1st when Spring term starts. It has been totally crazy getting back into school but Im glad I did. There is no turning back now! I am feeling pretty accomplished. But I have just started. I have so much more to accomplish before Im done and Im ready!
So now what? There is still lots to do. I need to finish Xmas shopping. Ship packages. Organize files. Visit parents. And hopefully move!
My Patch Together ideas seem to be pretty popular but I still need a few votes to make them into real figures.
Ive been thinking a lot about my new character series idea and want to play around with them more very soon!
I also have the terrible pile of unfinished artwork Id like to get to.
And play some Ragnarok Online! ^^

This is my final for Analysis of Form! I personally still dont like charcoal HAHA! But Im pretty happy with how this turned out. Im anxiously awaiting my final grades! @_@

Obv needs some more shadow definition close to the pottery and less definition at the edges. Doesn't need the definition in the light spots where the rose petal and two cups meet, though, because that looks fine IRL (there's a glare from the light that makes it hard to see that I carefully applied grey shadows to keep the edges from fading into each other). Also, the bottom right shadow on the bowl doesn't look nearly so angular/flat IRL.
Here's what I'm thinking:
- make the tabletop dark green like the leaves and do the background in that rusty-salmon color, with faint, skinny stripes in the parchment yellow
-- I don't think this will work - the red behind the rose would probably be too matchymatchy and it looks good against green. also the parchment yellow cup might not work with dark green
- darken the tabletop more like the deep parts of the rose (it uses the same red as the current tabletop, actually) and give it more of a gradient shading, so that it has texture. fill in the pale green in the background with a reversed shading (also make the green more yellow-hued)
-- I think a darker tabletop would be too overpowering, and the texturey shadowy look might be weird, like "where is this shadowyness coming from? where is the light source for all this?" and I'm not sure a reverse-shaded background would make sense either
- repaint the leaves to be lighter, to match the pale tones of the other items. leave the tabletop as is, but fix the shadows. fill in background with same green, but add faint yellow stripes for texture
-- I have absolutely no confidence in my ability to paint the leaves lighter. you should see my one and only attempt at a landscape -.- my skill with leaves and greenery = nil. i always add too much white and desaturate the colors too much, or else it gets too dark. and I'm not sure how stripes would look, but I can't think of another pattern to put in.
- somehow figure out a way to give that damn background texture so that the upper left corner doesn't feel so empty and off-balanced. honest to god, this is what has kept me from finishing this thing for two years, and i really want to give it to my stepmom for giftmas this year finally.
(also, work today = sitting in chair all day and freezing in a cold room. but all the boxes of files that got pulled yesterday have been sorted out and i'm going through a giant folder of paperwork, some of which goes in those files, and some of which goes in current files. i'm at the W's and finished alphabetizing everything, just gotta put the W's in the old ones. and then tomorrow I think I take the rest and put it into the current files? i have bruises all over my arms and legs from dealing with the filing cabinets and boxes yesterday, but I didn't realize until I took my jumper off this evening. I'd wondered why certain parts were so sore like that.)
So my family has been planning this trip for a while, but due to work commitments I'd regretfully cancelled on them. Well now it looks like I'll only be returning to Zambia in mid-January, which means I get to tag along and eat lots of ramen! We'll be renting a car to drive around Sapporo and the Tohoku region of Japan from 26 Dec to 10 Jan. My brother, who is planning this expedition, is fluent in Japanese and has spent two summers in Japan, so this should be lots of fun!
I am, however, so not looking forward to seeing my aunt and mom naked in the onsens...
I'm not particularly looking forward to the holidays, when every day will just be Sunday for a few weeks, and all the boredom that goes with that. Would that I could, I'd just work through them, like I have before. But no, no work. The media says "Good news! The rate of people becoming unemployed seems to be decreasing!". Thanks for the spin, Squealer, but that just means we're running out of people who can lose their jobs. Sorta like during the Black Death, someone cheering "Good news! Fatalities are down this month! There's nobody left to die!".
Anyway
Eddie Izzard was his usual funny self and OH GOD OH GOD I CAN'T FUCKING WRITE WHEN SOMEONE WALKS INTO THE ROOM AND JUST STANDS THERE GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT GETOUTGETOUTGETOUT he gave a good perfomance, despite coming down with a cold. Also, he didn't wear a dress, but few are brave enough to in this weather. Man sure loves Wikipedia. Wonder if he writes his own page?
I think the gig cheered Sabrina up a bit. During the interval, she suggested I could do what he does, talk funny nonsense about everything ever, but not on stage, on youtube or something. It's an idea. Sorta like a video blog, only not crap like a video blog, where someone talks into the camera about their day, their job, their friends and their cat, then hold up their cat to the camera and the cat gets more praise, acclaim, views and fans than any human being anywhere in the history of ever.
I dunno, I think I would like to talk about stuff like Eddie Izzard does, but it needs a hook. It can't be just my semi-pretty mug talking to the camera. I'd like it if it were a little more disjointed that that, with me out and about, and interspliced with footage from movies or TV shows. Sorta like Hate By Numbers, only crazier, sillier and not so cynical. Yes, I want to rant, be silly and show off my editings.
Now this. It was Rho's idea, so you can blame her.
1 - Find ten books that you own.
2 - Not any old ten books, though. Ten of what you believe to be the ten most diverse books that you own, covering as wide a range of interests as possible. In short, the sort of collection of books which when shown to somebody would make them go "who the hell owns all of these different books?"
3 - take these books, put them on a shelf, and then take a photograph of them.

And this would be, from left to right;
John Dies At The End by David Wong
The Terror by Dan Simmons
Guitar For Dummies
Our Haunted Planet by John Keel
The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams
The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis
Harpo Speaks! by Harpo Marx
Memoirs Of My Nervous Illness by Daniel Paul Schreber
SAS Survival Handbook by John "Lofty" Wiseman
Fangland by John Marks
Earth Abides by George R. Stewart
Hmm, I think I miscounted. Well, you may have noticed, none of those were mathbooks =p

You can now see the number of people who have visited your journal, your individual entries, a chart of comments, readers of the RSS feed of your journal, and the last 100 logged-in users who have visited your journal directly (if you've enabled My Guests).
Things you should know:
-Stats are completely anonymous (only My Guests is tied to username); only numbers are recorded, not any other information
-The times and dates in the graph are based on server time, which is UTC/GMT
-The light grey number at the top left corner of the graph is the statistical outlier
-While the graph may go back in time to this summer, the stats-gathering server was not on constantly, so previous stats may be missing. Today, and going forward, full stats are collected and displayed.
-If you opt out of My Guests (meaning that your username will not show up on other people's reports and you will not be able to view your My Guests tab), it does not affect your use of the rest of the Stats - if you're a Paid or Permanent user, you'll still be able to see all the rest of the information on this feature
( Page-by-page walkthrough )
- All Paid and Permanent accounts can send out the coupons by clicking here (it's also under Friends -> Holiday promotion in the site header)
- You can also send to people not on your Friends list by manually entering the username in the field provided
- If your friend declines the invitation, it will be returned to your available invitation pool and you'll be able to send to someone else
- You can send the invitations until January 15th

"My feeling about this weirdly inflated village in which I had come to make my home (haunted by memories of a boyhood spent in the beautiful mountain parks, the timberline country, of northwestern Colorado), suddently changed after I had lived in Los Angeles for seven long years of ehile. I have never been able to discover any apparent reason for this swift and startling conversion, but I do associate it with a particular occasion. I had spent an extremely active evening in Hollywood and had been deposited toward morning, by some kind sould, in a room at the Biltmor Hotel. Emerging next day from the hotel into the painfully bright sunlight, I started the rocky pilgrimage through Pershing Square to my office in a state of miserable decrepitude. In front of the hotel newsboys were shouting the headlines of the hour: an awful trunk-murder had just been commited; Aimee Semple McPherson had once again stood the town on its ear by some spectacular caper; a University of Southern California football star had been caught robbing a bank; a love-mart had been discovered in the Los Feliz Hills; a motion-picture producer had just wired the Egyptian government a fancy offer for permission to illuminate the pyramids to advertise a forthcoming production; and, in the intervals between these revelations, there was news about another prophet, fresh from the desert, who had predicted the doom of the city, a prediction for which I was morbidly grateful. In the center of the park, a little self-conscious of my evening clothes, I stopped to watch a typical Pershing Square divertissement: an aged and frowsy blonde, skirts held high above her knees, cheered by a crowd of grimacing and leering old goats, was singing a gospel hymn as she danced gaily around the fountain. Then it suddently occured to me that, in all the world, there neither was nor would ever be another place like this City of the Angels. here the American people were erupting, like lava from a volcano; here, indeed, was the place for ma - a ringside seat at the circus."
-Carey McWilliams, Southern California Country, 1946. Carved into Pershing Square, DTLA.
When I was in NYC, someone asked me: "LA or NYC?"
And I was honestly stumped.
Man today was so much bullshit. This week just get shittier and shittier. Twice today I deleted posts I was working on because I felt I was being too much negative and complaining, but dammit, this is ridiculous. It's like my house is attacking me. My attempts to do better are being attacked. I don't really feel any support at work at all. More projects just keep getting dumped on me. I finished the annual report today I think, barring any changes that might be waiting from the associate director in my email. The director already gave me his changes. I don't know about the associate director because the internet and email went down about 2:30 and didn't come back on before I left.
I should be happy because Sheena's going to pick me up in a minute to go out and have drinks in the Cotton District but all I want to do is eat a pint of ice cream and cry. That's self defeating behavior. I need to get cleaned up from my workout and get dressed to go out and be social. My arm will stop burning. I'll have a few drinks with an old friend and maybe two new ones. I may even have a sushi roll or two. Then I'll come home and finish addressing Christmas cards.
I finished The End of Overeating today. The biggest lesson I took from it was not only do I have a choice but I have a responsibility to myself to make and live by guidelines that result in my feeling good about the way I live my life. Yes, there's a ton of awful, overly processed food out there designed to make us not hungry and to crave more, and yes if you eat it it makes you fat, but you don't have to eat it. Yes my life is consistently displeasing to me right now and yes alcohol makes me temporarily feel better, but drinking all those calories make me hate myself in the dressing room so I don't need to drink them in excess. There's a lot of things right now I don't have a choice over but I definitely control how I treat myself. So it was a great read. Lots of good information on the food industry, plus really fascinating information on the biochemical responses to eating such food, then some practical information on how to get yourself off such bad food and life practices and regain control of yourself. I've been writing in my paper journal as I read this book and doing little responses, and today's ended with something like the worst thing that happened in 2009 was I lost myself, and the best thing has been my very recent decision to get myself back.
So what to wear out tonight?

Sitting in Kino Cafe on Cambie Street, a place I am far too familiar with from when I was a teenager, out to support an old friend in the latest band she’s in with her brother. I am uncomfortable here, isolated, oddly part and yet not of the lives of the people involved with this evening. We used to come here all the time. The bartender would flirt and pour us drinks, even though we were underage. Fifteen years later, the bartender is gone, off to open his own place on Main St, but the place is little changed. As, too, are the people I am here with again.
Oddly, like the venue space, she looks almost exactly the same. The clothing has changed, but excepting that, the only thing missing are her braces.
Her brother, by contrast, I cannot see him as the person he is past the ruin of who he used to be. It’s as if someone has clumsily globbed handfuls of plasticine over the familiar corners of his body, rounding him out into the oddly bulky costume of a stranger. Underneath his new shape, however, it’s likely he is still a liar.
She is my conduit to these people, to this place. Her I named far more, in certain ways, than her parents ever did, a solid fingerprint the world does not know to see. “I don’t like my name,” she said when we met, and so by the time she was eleven, I had changed it, twisting the syllables until it described her face, until it fit her as well as her own skin. Little Mouse, she is, and for so long now that people commonly ask if she’s Russian. If it weren’t for her, I never would have come. Out of the twenty socially incestuous names I know in this crowd, she is the only one I would call my friend. For the rest of them, it was more that I was sometimes around, though we were all almost constant companions, present for almost every adventure, for years.
It makes me wonder if I should feel sorry, if there is something I missed, though I would not change our distance. Even through my disasters, I prefer who I am to who they would have me be.
I'm a little bit worried about my back, but I'm sure I'll be fine, if I'm careful.
It stinks that it's going through giftmas, though, because I was planning to spend time this week painting (HOPEFULLY) and I never got anything done when I was working before. I mean, like taking care of different business things that needed doing. I guess I should rush on it some this afternoon, but I went to sleep too late last night and I woke too early because of the phone and now I'm so tired.
Also, yay for LJ reversing the profile gender thing (at least for now). There's another post at

So I just had several (semi-traumatic) flights to and from Vienna, Austria (from San Francisco, CA) last month. I was able to cope with most everything, except one thing, which I figured I'd ask you inimitable folks before embarking on my next flight, to Oklahoma, on Thursday.
**How/what do you do when you're sitting in a seat, say on a plane, and the person next to you keeps *touching* you, either by putting their arm in your seat or by taking up the entire arm-rest-area into your seat-personal-space?
I had this happen on all but one of my flights (5) to/from Vienna last month, and they were without exception male seat-mates.
For some reason, being a female, I wouldn't feel so.... violated(?) if it were a lady touching my side-boob/back fat with their arm. (I am chubby, but DO NOT take up more than my own seat space. I put my arms between the armrests so I am definitely NOT taking up more than my own alotted space. I travel economy-plus, and cannot afford an upgrade to first, otherwise I would because being touched by jmale strangers freaks me out that badly.)

In my super long post about the weekend, I left out the best part. When we got into town on Friday, we went to eat sushi at a place neither of us had been to before. We decided to get sushi boxes, which were used to being served in boxes, but when they brought out our plates, they were like sushi rectangles - about an inch and a half high and 4 inches long. It was rice, shredded crab, rice, fish and avocado on top. We were pretty hungry as Jackson is two hours from here and we left around 6:30. So we're eating and enjoying it but it's not the easiest sushi we've ever ate. We had to be very careful not to pick it up too forcefully and the part under the crab had a tendency to want to separate. Then of course keeping it in tact after biting it in the 3rd to eat it was another trick, but we were just eating and talking when the waitress came back up.
She apologized but she said she had to come talk to us. She said everyone who orders the sushi box always calls her back for forks. She said they make a big mess and rice is everywhere and they just give up and can't do it. She said when people order it, she wants to get them forks but they get so offended if you offer them a fork but they all end up needing one, so she's learned just to hang back and watch and wait for them to call her and ask for a fork, but we didn't and she was amazed at how well we used chop sticks. We were amused because we had remarked about how we had to be careful eating these things. She was really impressed with us and wanted to know how we knew how to use chopsticks so well. We let her in on the secret that Sheena's half Japanese and she grew up using chopsticks and having been her best friends for years I've had my fair share of practice. I felt like we got gold stars by our names.

I got home from work and was starting to unlock the door tonight when I noticed a coiled snake at my feet. I ran, screamed, breathed, screamed again. Called D to turn on the light for the front door (we enter through the side door normally). So I went inside the front and D went to investigate the snake he probably stepped over three times this evening. Luckily it was lethargic especially considering it was on the door step like the step up into the house that the door rests on. D moved it to the woods with a broom handle, but before he got it all the way to the brush, he snapped a few ( photos: )
Despite the day starting out somewhat promising, it went to shit by the afternoon and coming home to a snake was just not how I would have liked my day.
Thanks in advance.
Are there ANY locations for freshly baked Krispy Kreme in the metro area? Personally, I think Montgomery Donuts make the best donuts and I was ecstatic to find out they have locations open again.
